Polypremum procumbens

Polypremum procumbens L.

Habit: Polypremum procumbens grows as a branching glabrous, herbaceous perennial trailing out from the center to 30 cm. The sessile leaves are arranged oppositely, to 3 cm long (usually smaller), linear with an acuminate leaf apex with an entire margin.

The complete, perfect, actinomorphic flowers are solitary terminally and axillary. The calyx has 4 unfused sepals. The corolla has 4 fused, pubescent, white petals. There are 4 anthers are fused at the base to the corolla.  The superior ovary has 2 locules and multiple ovules. The fruit is a round, notched capsule.

Habitat: Polypremum procumbens grows in areas with low quality soils (rock flats and sandy areas).

Distribution: Polypremum procumbens occurs throughout the island groupings of the Lucayan Archipelago, the Caribbean, North, Central, and South America.

Medicinal/Cultural/Economic usage: Polypremum procumbens is not known to be used medicinally in the Lucayan Archipelago.
