Over the weekend of June 27th, 2014, the Levy Preserve hosted Dr. Jacqueline Miller and Dr. Debbie Lott of the Florida Museum of Natural History, Dr. Goss from Palm Beach Atlantic University and Mr. Mark Simon on a rapid survey of Eleutheran Lepidoptera (Butterflies and Moths). A National Geographic Society grant supports their research/collection program. They came to The Preserve on Friday for night collecting and did additional surveys as far south as Lighthouse Point and Rock Sound. It was an especially exciting event for The Preserve as the Lepidoptera are an incredibly diverse group (~175,000 species worldwide) and can be very difficult to identify. The Preserve’s insect collection, which is being complied by Dr. Paul De Luca, currently has 68 Lepidoptera species and the Lepidoptera team was very helpful in identifying these species.
