Habit: Lemna obscura grows as a floating thallus with 2-3 leaf-like structures that are 3-6 mm in length, obovate to suborbicular, with a rounded apex and entire margin.
The incomplete, imperfect, actinomorphic flowers are in 1-2 flowered spathes. Flowers highly reduced with no calyx or corolla. Staminate flowers have a single stamen and no carpel. Carpellate flowers have no stamens and a single carpel.
Sexual reproduction is rare.
Habitat: Lemna obscura grows in Fresh Water Wetlands and in slow moving streams/rivers.
Distribution: Lemna obscura is NOT native to the Lucayan Archipelago. It is native to southern United States, Mexico, Central and South America.
Medicinal/Cultural/Economic usage: Lemna obscura has not been used medicinally in the Bahamas.
